Perfect Winter Skincare Guide

With the spin of the Earth, winter is here again. Things seem to slow down, nights feel longer, the temperatures nipping at the body… it’s such a beautiful time. Great food, good company, bonfires and warm drinks. But what about your skin? The nip in the air is not so merciful on the delicate layers of your skin that have only just begun to adjust to the change from summer to fall. Therefore, here’s the perfect winter skincare guide to help you navigate this season.

What Happens to Your Skin During Winter?

  • Excessive dryness and flaking.
  • Blustery snow storms can cause redness, rashes and even frostbite if you are exposed for too long.
  • Dry hands, elbows and knees.
  • Skin irritation.
  • The quick buildup of dead skin cells.
  • Breakouts due to a tendency to eat oily, high-fat, high-carb food.
  • Perfect Winter Skincare

1. Double-Cleansing

Start your daily winter skincare routine with double cleansing. Start with an oil-based cleanser to take off all the dirt, grime and oils from your skin (especially your pores). Follow it up with a water-based cleanser to finish up and impart some much-needed hydration to your skin. In the freezing temperatures, with the heating drying the air inside your house even more, you need to ensure that none of your skincare products are drying. Cleansers generally do dry, except when you use a moisturising one.

2. Exfoliating

Usually, dermatologists suggest exfoliating every 2-3 days. But during winter time, you can up the ante. A daily exfoliation routine will ensure that you are scrubbing away any dead, dry or damaged skin cells that may accumulate over time and dull your complexion. Exfoliation will also help you remove particles from clogged pores that may often cause winter breakouts.

3. Layering of Moisturiser

Moisturiser is the most important part of a perfect winter skincare routine. You may be happy with your usual moisturiser, but see if a thicker, richer, creamier moisturiser might help more. Generally, our skin demands more hydration in this season due to all the dryness. It starts to feel stretched and tight, there may be patches, flaking skin and even redness. These are your body’s signs, telling you to get something intensely moisturising — like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera (for oily skin). Products infused with these products must be on your radar.

4. Hydrating Serum

Serums sound like they are for anti-aging-obsessed mature women. But truly, every woman benefits from the right kind of serum. In winter especially, you will find your skin faring better with a hydrating serum. It must ideally be applied before the moisturiser so that the runny consistency seeps in before the cream. In case this is a night serum, you can apply it before bed.

5. Sunscreen

Use sunscreen. Without fail. Even if the day is short and the sun is hiding behind frowning clouds. The fact is, the sun’s invisible spectrum of rays like UVA and UVB which are harmful to the skin, filters in even on a gloomy day. That is why doctors tell you to wear sunscreen even when you are indoors. You may reduce the SPF intensity for winter, but keep wearing it.

6. Humidifier

If you don’t already use one, this winter invest in a humidifier. It will be the difference between dry, dull-looking parched skin and happy hydrated skin. The moisture in the air is maintained by a humidifier, even while the outdoors are cold and dry.

7. Lukewarm Showers

Tempting as they are, hot showers take a lot from your skin. They strip your skin of essential oils and moisture, and may also lead to mild redness and burns. In all the enjoyment of the shower, you hardly notice these things until it is too late. That is why, it is recommended that for perfect winter skincare, you skip the long hot showers, and instead opt for a lukewarm one.

8. Facial

You not only need to take care of your skin for it to remain healthy through winter but also need to look great for the upcoming festivities. With Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year lined up, there are tons of parties to attend. So it is best to include a facial every 3-4 weeks in your winter skincare. Book a standing appointment with your esthetician and let them take a call on what your skin needs for that appointment. It is usually a dose of hydration and some tender love and care for winter.
